Instrumentaler får vokal

Kjente instrumentallåter får stemmerett.

Less har rett og slett tatt for seg et knippe kjente låter vi kjenner som instrumentale, og prøvd seg på å legge på vokal.

About the procject

«Heavy Words is a unique musical project, the aim of which was to create vocal versions of well-known and previously unsung instrumental pieces from the rock and metal genre. The album contains a wide stylistic spectrum with a variety of climates: post rock, progressive rock, hard rock, heavy metal, thrash metal, modern thrash, groove metal, black/death metal. There are subtle sounds of acoustic guitar, energetic fantasy spaces, but also dark harmonies and blast beats.

All compositions used for this project are original pieces. Some of them are unchanged, while others have undergone subtle changes to achieve the effect of classic vocal number constructions. All versions were prepared with passion, sincerity and adoration for these pieces.»

I had to check in with Less, so, how did you come up with this idea?

«It is entirely my concept and implementation, i.e. not only the lyrics and vocals, but also the graphics and the lyric video montage with the album. There is also an ebook that I wrote for the project: I Unintentionally Created a New Genre of Music (so far only in Polish). The title refers to the fact that music journalists and musicians I know claimed that it was something unique, innovative. And one of them clearly said that I created a new genre. That is why I called it vocker. It sounds similar to cover, but it emphasizes the vocals, as an element added to the composition created as an instrumental.

In the book, I write about my inspirations, the creation of the project, interesting facts and I also provide the lyrics. I admit that it happened quite spectacularly… and I only wanted to do a vocal version of The Call of Ktulu by Metallica, which I had been thinking about for a long time. And because I am a vocalist and I am lucky enough to sometimes come up with things that are different, fresh in a way… That is why I use such promptings of imagination.»

How did you approach the songs? These are songs most people have a close relationship with; did you consider the peoples feelings? Or was it all in what you wanted?

«The fact that someone has feelings related to music is their private business. One person will like some song, another will hate it, and a third one will say that he haven’t heard it. If you wanted to listen to what someone says, you’d have to sit deep in a cave and never go outside. And me, if I have an idea for something, I just make it happen. Someone might like it, and another won’t care at all.

This attitude was visible, for example, in Metallica’s ’72 Seasons‘, which I did a private edit of. Because there were many voices claiming that the songs are artificially extended with strange additions that do them nothing good. I edited this album and shortened it from 77 to 60 minutes. Some people are delighted with it, and the others are furious about it. Because we should remember: for some that is the band’s best album.»

«As an observer of reality, I understand it very well, because everyone has the right to like or love what corresponds to them. That’s why I simply chose the songs for Heavy Words and produced them in the versions I had in my soul. You know, when my friends listened to them and shared their suggestions, each time one of them loved a right song, while the another said that he skipped it on subsequent listens. I think that people who are vulgar in their opinions when describing what they experience have a problem only with themselves. Because the effect of creation is neither good nor bad. Above all, it tells about the creator and communicates with the recipient in an appropriate way. If the recipient wants to be inspired by this project to do something good – great!

And if not, they will simply skip this project and the world will not collapse. The reception of the project will show the class of the recipient as a person.»

Why these songs?

«Because I love them! And I made them with attention and respect. I even receive opinions that I respected the music, because I selected the vocal spaces in an appropriate way, allowing it to sound like a natural whole. I listened to these pieces until I felt the ideas for the melody lines as perfectly integrated with the message of the music.

I perceive music very mentally and creating vocals had to bring a community of impressions with the climate of a right piece. The composition was to be filled with an aura matching with the story that I convey in words and the lyrics developed the original titles, which I kept.

First the lines were created. Only then do the lyrics come. That’s my system of the work. First I feel what the vocals can and should do in right places, and which one fragments should necessarily remain, as a breath. Sometimes these are short, and sometimes quite long fragments. Because the vocals are a melody or quasi-melodic expression, therefore its coexistence with music in the right form is very important to me. The text can be processed so that it harmonizes with the melody line, but the line is basically one of the instruments, which is why I treat this element this way.»

And did any of the songs end up as favourites?

«Each of them is amazing and each creates its own Universe of impressions. I felt each of them equally intensely during the recordings and I integrated with each of them completely. Someone not connected to the project would definitely be able to point out the one they consider the best in their opinion. For me: each is truly unique.»

Any plans to do this again?

«Yes, I will definitely repeat it, but the material is instrumental pieces by one artist. They are strong, aggressive, heavy and nicely modern.»

What do you do beside this project?

«I am a computer graphic designer. I design logos, album covers, book covers and basically everything that such design can be used for. For example: color restyling of cars or building facades, industrial forms, product packaging and I could go on and on.

I am also a writer. I have published seven books and one that I was the decisive co-creator of. And now I am writing three more.

I sang in several bands, but I also compose my own stuff; not always metal. I am also a drummer. I was a journalist and presenter in two large radio stations in my country.

I am passionate about unexplained phenomena and for several years I organized an interdisciplinary symposium on them I named Hidden Reality in my town. And this is only a truly small part of the whole about me.»
